The OWEN Project

The rough sea eats these boats alive -  they need to be repainted every six to eight months.  This is the second time OWEN has been repainted.  The job involves completely stripping the old paint, resealing with resin, sanding, repainting.  It takes 3-5 days and employs up to ten people, including the women who bring food at lunchtime.  

Fishing is a tough business, but when there is a good catch, the money is quite good.   Recently, Makale reported a catch of tuna at $650, and another catch worth $400.  We pay the fisherman, for gas, and set aside money for Ariane and Owen refurbishment.  

We decided to provide start up funds for a woman, Yacine Ba,to purchase fabrics and beauty supplies in Mauritania for resale in Dakar.  She is supporting her mother and sister.  We don't do loans but encourage our grantees to "pass it on".
